I think it was an intentional choice to make the purpose behind all the bloody fighting so muddy, but it made me really dislike the war-loving snow-elves.

Why is it okay to kill all the trolls simply because they're trolls? Does that make the elves any better than the trolls themselves?

It's a question that the Pinis and Cutter seem to be aware of and consciously attempting to address; Cutter forms a tentative truce with some of the trolls, and rejects the war-hungry mindset of his fellow elves, asking why they can't at least begin to think about living in peace.

That's something I liked about his journey with Skywise - slowly learning that humans and elves could communicate without blindly killing one another.

Still, there was so much violence in this and subsequent chapters, and I just get bored by slashing and fighting, especially when it's ultimately for something so pointless.

What did they fight and die for? For that dull and largely expected conclusion? They wanted so badly to get back to their homeland, their birthright, and then they just Realistic, I suppose, but depressing.

As for the relationships, apparently Leetah is still pretty much just with Cutter because of the soul-bond and their two children, not because she actually, truly loves him.

I never liked Rayek, and while I expected him to eventually show up again, it was pretty hugely disappointing to see that Leetah was still in love with him.

I guess she's supposed to still, 7 years on, be torn between two worlds and possibly in love with two men, which You can make that work, but it just convinced me that she's still stuck in a choice she had to make so many years earlier.

If you juxtapose this with the frankly pretty disturbing recognition story in the bird-mountain, and then the emotional and deeply romantic true-name exchange between Redlance and Nightfall, it becomes pretty clear that recognition's only purpose is to strengthen bloodlines through the birth of children with special powers.

If you want love, you have to look elsewhere. There's an equally chunky second volume sitting on my shelf, which I don't think I really have the energy to pick up right after finishing this one, but I'll try to get to it soon.

Perhaps it deals with more of Leetah's story, since at the close of this one, she was dealing with horror over the bloodshed and the part she played in it.

As much as I liked Cutter, it'd be nice to see Leetah stand more on her own. It seems like she's lost herself in some ways over the years.

Maybe volume 2 helps to fix that. Apr 27, Dennise Garcia rated it it was ok. I didn't find it all that interesting. Each story was something I've read in countless of other fantasy novels so I was expecting something new but didn't get it.

Sometimes, it'd go on small tangents that were actually interesting, only to end up back at the same place. One example of this is when the love interest has two guys after her and they have to compete for her love.

The interesting thing abou I didn't find it all that interesting. The interesting thing about this part is that after the competition, even though one guy obviously won, she's still allowed to choose which one she wants and she doesn't even have to choose one if she wants to.

Of course, we all know what's going to happen in the end.. The characters themselves, too, are kind of typical like the selfless heroic leader and the beautiful healer girlfriend.

She doesn't like the selfless heroic leader because he's rude but she does like him because he cares about his tribe. It's just all so typical.

The artwork was kind of nice but it was a bit hypersexualized at times and I didn't really want to see boobs and muscles every page.

Overall, if I had nothing to do I would read it, but I would prefer reading anything else. Oct 01, Kyle Burley rated it it was amazing.

For those who don't know, "Elfquest" is an important title in the history of comics and graphic novels. It was one the first self-published comics to reach something like mainstream success, it was one of the first American comics visually influenced by Japanese Manga and it was one of the first major titles created, written and drawn by a woman.

Wendy Pini is one of the unsung giants of the comic book industry and her great series holds up beautifully after three decades plus.

This volume reprin For those who don't know, "Elfquest" is an important title in the history of comics and graphic novels.

This volume reprints the complete original run of twenty 32 page black and white quarterly issues telling the tale of the Wolfriders, a small tribe of feral elves driven from their forest home by humans to seek their destiny in an unknown world.

Over the course of pages, Pini establishes several different elf cultures as well as those of trolls an humans, but the Wolriders and their young, visionary chief named Cutter, remain the focus throughout.

The characters are vivid and well developed, the story epic with a strong love story at it's core, and the pencils gorgeous. Pini's art is all clean lines, elegant, organic design and has a strong emphasis on character.

An essential text. May 22, C. Wendy and Richard Pini created something that seemed extremely original despite the dependence on tropes like elves, trolls, and sprites.

This massive page collection shows you how well the black-and-white art worked in Elfquest, although some of the implications of the color were actually important to the story and that is somewhat sad.

In the s, the implied interracial between elvin groups romances would have had more political implications than it does now, and so the book seems som Wendy and Richard Pini created something that seemed extremely original despite the dependence on tropes like elves, trolls, and sprites.

In the s, the implied interracial between elvin groups romances would have had more political implications than it does now, and so the book seems somewhat tame by standards, but would have been more racy for a fantasy comic in the s.

Pini's introduction of concepts like Recognition seem intriguing as the fate of being beloved in the book actually does have some more awkward and sometimes unpleasant side effects than in most fantasy literature.

The characters grew in depth over time but without the cynicism that many modern attempts at fantasy will introduce as a stand-in for character complexity.

This is awesome and grand, and everything a graphic novel should be. We have all sorts of isms being challenged here. I love the inverted tropes. Nicely rollicking comic.

In particular, there are all different types of strength as well as debates about philosophy and truth. Aug 26, Richard Haines rated it it was amazing.

This series was my introduction to comics, now become my lifelong passion. This story has more heart, and imagination than any other story of it's time.

It has been nearly thirty years since I read it last, and has been as magical for me this time as it was the first. I highly recommend it.

Sep 06, David rated it it was amazing. I've been reading this story for almost as long as I can remember. At a young age, the story was compelling and full of action even if I didn't fully understand everything.

I re-read it occasionally as I grew up. It not only became firmly entrenched as a " I've been reading this story for almost as long as I can remember.

It not only became firmly entrenched as a "comfortable" entertainment which never let me down, but it continued to grow with me as I understood parts of it more deeply.

Recently, my wife finally relented and read my old Starblaze collection - and she loved it too! That rekindled my interest and after doing a little reading, I found that Dark Horse had published a black-and-white collection of not just the Original Quest in this single, huge volume , but also the other stories which had come after.

I'd always been interested in seeing the black and white art as originally published by Warp in the comics and I was very, very interested in reading the rest of the story.

So I ordered them all. For me, the Quest had always ended with Issue 20, "Quest's End Part Two". But I was aware that there was more story. I think I never pursued it for fear that it would prove inferior.

By the way, Wikipedia has a really great list of ElfQuest publications which I have found very helpful.

At any rate, I was really excited to enjoy the Original Quest all over again in a different format. The black and white really shows off Wendy's inking, which is often spectacular.

ElfQuest is truly a one-of-a-kind labor of love. Each scene is well composed, the focal points are always clear, action is meaningful.

Characters are rendered distinctly and you can tell who even the tiniest figure is and what they're doing. The facial expressions and body language of the characters are so good that some of the oldest memories I have of this aren't words or even actions, but are instead a particular grief-stricken face or a pair of characters sharing a secret smile.

It's a rare and wonderful thing when an old favorite movie or book or song is not only as good as you remember as a kid, but is actually even better than you remember.

That's certainly the case with the story of ElfQuest. I picked up all sorts of new things now that I'm in my late 30s that I didn't even fully appreciate in my early 20s.

Like any truly great artwork, it reveals new insights at whatever stage of life you encounter it. The story is so well crafted that numerous re-readings reward you with all sorts of "ah ha!

Like anything dense, it takes re-readings to enjoy all of the art and story and all of the little things happening in the background of each scene.

ElfQuest is not a "been there, done that" story, it is more like a real place with living creatures that continue to show me new tricks every time I visit.

Now, incredibly, I have three more big volumes with new material to read well, new to me. I hardly know how to prepare my mind. May 23, Brittany rated it it was amazing.

I read nearly all of the first series of ElfQuest when I was younger. My mom was going through old boxes to find items for yard sale and eBay.

She pulled out these comics and decided to sell them. I read the first and then secreted them away to finish the series. Needless to say, the never made it onto eBay.

I fell in love with the characters and style immediately, but was disappointed to find three issues missing from the collection so I never found out what happened in the end.

Fast forward to I read nearly all of the first series of ElfQuest when I was younger. Fast forward to last year, I was browsing the book store when I came across these volumes.

I was overjoyed because I would finally get to finish the story! Even though I knew the majority of the story, I was still filled with excitement and anticipation!

The highs and lows are breathtaking and the realism rings true. There isn't a forced moment in the story. The pain Clearbrook feels resonates within the reader and the tears come readily not once, but twice for Nightrunner.

The addition of the author notes at the end is a real treat. Getting a glimpse into their world and thoughts is as exciting as their story and transports new readers to another time and perspective.

I greatly appreciated the note about Skywise and Cutter because I didn't grow up in a time of hyper-masculinity and fear of latent sexuality.

Their relationship isn't strange to me, but to put it into the perspective of the s makes it all the stronger. And I would be remiss not to mention the art.

The imagery is what drew me to the dusty comics in the first place. I was drawn in by the outpouring of emotion within the characters' faces and particularly their eyes.

I hadn't experienced such raw and authentic drawings before and I was captive. I still love examining the pictures for new clues or nuances I hadn't seen before and, without fail, I find them every time!

Aug 08, Steven rated it it was amazing. An epic fantasy story that could go head to head with anything on the shelf today even though it uses some comic storytelling no-nos like Third person narration.

This edition is a page tome containing the entire first story arc of the Wolfrider elf tribe's quest to unite the scattered tribes of all elven kind and find the secrets of their history.

This journey takes the Wolfrider's from the heart of the forest to the edge of the desert to the tops of the frozen mountains and each stop brings An epic fantasy story that could go head to head with anything on the shelf today even though it uses some comic storytelling no-nos like Third person narration.

This journey takes the Wolfrider's from the heart of the forest to the edge of the desert to the tops of the frozen mountains and each stop brings to friends and villains who have complex personalities and deep histories that span thousands of years.

This book is also ahead of its time with its almost casual inclusion of characters who are bisexual, homosexual, and nonmonogamous but is also masterful in the way that these things are naturally woven into the story and culture of the elves.

This is a book is a top recommendation for anyone who likes comics or fantasy. My one word of warning is that this book reads a lot more like a modern-day manga than a modern-day comic book, not only because of coincidental things like the black and white art and large eyes but also because the storytelling takes the time to focus on the internal emotional lives of the characters and milks just as much drama from interpersonal conflict as elf vs troll battle royales there is an entire arc based on two elves competing for the hand of the same woman.

Some of the outfits in this book were definitely designed in the 70s but other than that this fantastic story is and its charming setting and characters are timeless and cover the range of human experience from love and friendship to war and exile.

This book deserves its place as a classic of the fantasy genre and a graphic novel. Nov 26, Cathi rated it it was amazing.

I have the first issue of this, the Marvel edition. It contains the letter of apology for not seeing Elfquest's worth at the comic's initial pitch.

Too much fantasy, a story that doesn't adhere to heteronormative concepts, and the list goes on.

Thankfully, through perseverance and its ability to resonate with so many Elfquest made it big, only recently ending its epic run.

Volume One brings the reader to their knees more than once with loss and triumph dancing together through the pages. I recom I have the first issue of this, the Marvel edition.

I recommend taking in each page slowly. There's a lot to see and one doesn't want to miss a single expression or subtle motion.

Themes of bigotry and equality, of staying true to one's roots versus accepting needed change, and leadership that needs both are road mapped.

Lifemate, Lovemate, Soulbrother; I know all three and delight in a story that contains those familiarities and wrote about them ahead of its time.

As someone who has friendships that bend well past the common definition, who loves fantasy, and appreciates fantastic art, I will always find myself returning to these pages.

The Quest has just begun and I intend to see it to its end. Jul 08, Mads rated it it was amazing. The nostalgia definitely makes this series rank higher than it usually would.

After ten years, it was like coming home to reconnect with the storylines and characters that had such an impact on my imagination as a kid.

Since this is basically a supervolume of the first few graphic novels, I actually got to read the opening issues for the first time.

I borrowed my uncle's volumes when I was little, and he only had volume two onward. Categories : Comics births. Navigation menu Views Page Discussion Edit this page History.
